Before coming to the UK to study for an MSc in Psychology, I worked in a commercial bank in Nigeria and was excited about my new journey. After joining a gym, I began experiencing extreme tiredness, weakness and loss of interest in things I loved. During a visit to my godmother in London, she noticed my unusual breathing and insisted I go to A&E, where I was diagnosed with heart failure.
I returned to school for my final exams, but two weeks later became critically ill alone in my room. On 1 August 2023, a friend found me almost lifeless and rushed me to Bradford Royal Infirmary.3 weeks after, I was later transferred to Wythenshawe Hospital after developing cardiogenic shock and other complications.
I was diagnosed with acute heart failure, stage 3 acute kidney injury, cardiogenic shock and antibodies. I was placed in an induced coma for two weeks, placed on BIVAD which uncomfortablly assisted my breathing and was placed on the super-priority list for a heart transplant.
On 1 October 2023, while in intensive care, I learned that a donor heart was available. The best news i have ever heard! The transplant was successful, and I woke up on my birthday—what a rebirth!
I will always be grateful to the transplant team at Wythenshawe Hospital for giving me a great support and opportunity of second chance. Since my transplant, I have completed my MSc with flying colours, attended the first British Transplant Games and embraced life with renewed gratitude. I enjoy watching football, especially, Premier League.
This journey has taught me that transplantation requires courage, positivity and gratitude. To my donor’s family: your decision to give the gift of life saved me. I dedicated my MSc to you and your loved one, and every achievement I make is a tribute to the person whose heart continues to beat in me.
To families who might want to say yes to this cause, it's the most satisfying thing to do. Giving meaning to life and providing a precious second chance is honorable. 🙏🏾❤️
