A Big Thank to the Qayum Family who this morning presented the Unit with a cheque for £2000.
Shaz underwent a heart transplant recently, he had been on a LVAD pump for a number of years and was the second patient to receive a heart using the Organ Care System which New Start purchased earlier in the year. Using this method the Transplant team are able to maintain heart in a warm, functioning state outside of the body to optimize their health and allow continuous clinical evaluation. In the next few months they should be able to carry out the first DCD (donation after circulatory death) which hopefully will reduce our waiting list.
