A Family Affair
A Big Thank to the Qayum Family who this morning presented the Unit with a cheque for £2000.
Shaz underwent a heart transplant recently, he had been on a LVAD pump for a number of years and was the second patient to receive a heart using the Organ Care System which New Start purchased earlier in the year. Using this method the Transplant team are able to maintain heart in a warm, functioning state outside of the body to optimize their health and allow continuous clinical evaluation. In the next few months they should be able to carry out the first DCD (donation after circulatory death) which hopefully will reduce our waiting list.
Braving the cold waters of Windermere for New Start
Rob Minnican took part in the Great North 2 mile Swim at weekend, He finished in a very respectable 1.04mins and raised nearly £800 for New Start. He’s pictured with a very proud Dad who underwent a heart transplant at Wythenshawe four years ago

A Remarkable Achievement
We are pleased to announce that Heart Recipient David Ayre has completed his 50 mile walk along Northumberland Way and raised £3600 for New Start and the ECMO service at UHSM. Fantastic achievement David less than 12 months after Transplant.
Along with his family, friends and some familiar faces from the unit Dave took on this challenge Starting in Amble at 10.00am on Saturday 30th April 2016, walking over 4 days through Craster, Seahouses, Belford, Fenwick and finishing in Berwick (50 miles).
